Jo ShinI had a wonderful time at my first CHI conference. I was able to meet many peers and fellow researchers working at the forefront of Human-Computer Interaction. It was especially amazing to present my graduate work to a packed room at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow, Scotland. While I live-tweeted much of my #CHI2019 experience, here is an overview of the week!
The highlight of my week was definitely my first presentation at CHI. I’m very thankful to my co-authors/supervisors – Dr. Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda and Dr. William Odom (SFU SIAT), as well as my fellow presenter and external examiner, Dr. Audrey Desjardins (UW).
This year’s CHI was the second largest – while 2958 papers were submitted for peer review this year, only 703 were accepted (23.8% acceptance rate). This translated to nearly 4000 attendees from all over the world, making 2019 the second highest attended CHI conference ever.
I was able to get to know many fellow SFU SIAT graduate students, professors – and alumni!
I participated in a couple of courses – the first was a hands on tangible interaction workshop and the second was a conversation design course from the folks at Google.
I also got tweet about for the first time which was a little weird and flattering.
There was some industry presence at CHI too – Ivan Poupyrev from Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) division closed the conference. It was a long week but a great first experience of CHI.
